PUPILS of several schools have collected 150kg of waste materials from Labuan’s beaches to produce artworks for an “upcycle” project.

The duty-free island is also known as the “Pearl of Borneo” for its marine life, tourism and water villages.

To maintain Labuan’s status, the National Arts Gallery got schoolchildren to take part in the art project, sponsored by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.

Many pupils said they were frustrated to find the beaches full of “strange” litter, such as comforters, drip bags, food packaging and medicines.

The project was aimed at boosting pupils’ awareness of their responsibility to the environment, as well as encouraging their creativity. – October 3, 2019.
