TAOISTS in Malaysia welcome the arrival of the Nine Emperor Gods yesterday evening, the eve of the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The festival is observed mainly by the Chinese community in Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

The festival begins with the reception of the Nine Emperor Gods and ends with a send off on the ninth day. Processions are held from the temple to the seashore or river, as the gods are believed to travel through the waterways. Devotees dressed in white, carrying incense and candles, await the arrival of the nine emperor deities.

A carnival atmosphere pervades the temple during the festival. Many devotees stay at the temple and abstain from eating meat during this period. – October 20, 2017.
