A WATER village known as Kg Kukup Laut has been existing for nearly 120 years in Kukup, Johor.

But the hundreds of residents, some from more than six generations, living in the village have witnessed rapid development from wooden houses upgraded into double storey.

Most are fishermen and life at sea has made them adaptable.

The village is next to the Kukup ferry terminal and a popular tourist attraction, with many locals setting up homestays to give visitors a taste of living close to the waters.

The village is close to Pulau Kukup, a world heritage site known for its mangroves and national park.

Residents are optimistic about the future and look forward to proper development to retain the uniqueness of the water village. – November 6, 2019.
