IN Kampung Bukit Piatu, Malacca, a long held tradition marks the beginning of Ramadhan.

Every day at 3am, from the start to the end of ramadhan, a group of villagers – old and young – come together to wake the village up for sahur – the predawn meal in preparation for the day’s fast –  to with the sound of music and songs.

Equipped with drums, fife and the occasional bucket, the group starts its 3km walk around the village playing hari raya songs, making sure that everyone is up as they make their way around.

This tradition has been practiced here for more than 75 years and its one that the residents look forward to every year. – June 3, 2018.
