THIS year’s Merdeka Day is nothing short of historic, being the first under a new government after Pakatan Harapan swept into power at the May 9 elections.

The parade this year features the theme of “Sayangi Malaysiaku”, with the components of patriotism, public order, national security and unity.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had also chosen to hold the parade in Putrajaya instead of Dataran Merdeka. The last time the Merdeka Day Parade was held in Putrajaya was 2005.

Dr Mahathir was also the person who initiated the development of Putrajaya into Malaysia’s administrative capital.

An estimated 300,000 people thronged Dataran Putrajaya, with some gathering as early as 5am, to witness the parade. – August 31, 2018.
