Tahfiz school fire not soon forgotten

LAST year on September 14, hours before the dawn prayers, 21 pupils of the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah religious school were crying out for help. With the neighbourhood still fast asleep, most did not hear the faint cries that came from the top floor of the three-storey building. Trapped between barred windows and with only one exit out the building, the pupils, along with two wardens, eventually lost their lives to the fire.
Only 11 made it out by jumping out of the building to safety. All 21 pupils were temporarily staying in this old premise while awaiting the completion of the school’s new building.
Since then, the tragedy remains embedded in the minds of all who teach and study there, and will not be soon forgotten. – September 15, 2018.
