ANWAR Ibrahim has stressed that Pakatan Harapan is not promoting vice (maksiat) and said a recent statement by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa had been taken out of context.
“We need to understand the context. He is not encouraging vice but he said that we have laws. Vice is still a vice,” Anwar said at an event today.
The Port Dickson by-election candidate had been asked about a recent report by The Star newspaper that Mujahid had said that khalwat (close proximity) raids will be stopped.
The Amanah lawmaker later refuted the report, saying his words had been taken out of context.
“I did not say that the raids will stop. This is probably a misinterpretation by the editors of my statement,” Mujahid was reported as saying by Al Hijrah TV.
“I only spoke about offences committed in public and private, and the misuse of power by the authorities which goes against Islam,” the Parit Buntar lawmaker said.
Mujahid’s original statement had been criticised by several muftis for being liberal.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also weighed in saying Islam should not dictate to its followers. – October 7, 2018.
