DR Mahathir Mohamad welcomed a tax sweep on his sons’ companies but said it should also include Prime Minister Najib Razak and his family.

The Inland Revenue Board and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission are welcome to go through his accounts, the Pakatan Harapan chairman said after chairing the coalition’s second presidential meeting at Parliament today.

But Dr Mahathir did not stop there, suggesting that MACC and IRB also conduct the same investigation into Najib, his wife and their family members.

He said Najib had committed a crime against the nation.

“(They) should also find the source of wealth of certain ministers like Datuk Seri Zahid (Ahmad Hamidi) and also Hishammuddin Hussein,” he said, referring to the deputy prime minister and defence minister respectively.

“I suggested that MACC should study the lifestyle of their brothers and sisters. As for me, they can examine all my books, MACC, IRB.”

Dr Mahathir said the government’s action was an abuse of power.

“They are the government and they have the power to abuse.”

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir’s son, Mukhriz, said the raid on August 8 was conducted when neither he nor his two siblings were around.

“I guess they wanted to make sure all of us are not around (when they raided the premises). They seized documents, files.”

He said the investigation carried by IRB was for the non-declaration of taxes between 2011 and 2013.

“We were told, we do not have to file it in back then. I expect we have to submit some documents to fulfil some of the request, such as tax declaration form and others,” said Mukhriz.

Without accusing anyone, he said he could connect the dots and suspect it had to do with the calls made by Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz and Zahid to investigate Dr Mahathir’s family.

“It is political intimidation. It has to be. This happened a week after Nazri, DPM suggested it and it really happened, so I connect the dots.

“And we expect that this is not going to stop. The harassment will continue. It’s politically motivated.”

Mukhriz added that he has no problem working with the IRB, calling those in the raiding team professionals who were just doing their job.

“They are professionals just doing their job. They are taking instruction from people with political interest.” – August 10, 2017.
