PARLIAMENT’S 13-man research team is insufficient to serve lawmakers’ needs, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof.

The former judge said there needs to be more researchers to improve the quality of debates.

“It is obviously insufficient. We want to increase it (number of researchers).

“We have 13 researchers, which is not enough. Parliament is a place where many topics are discussed. We really need experts in several areas to feed information and data to (any) lawmaker,” Ariff said in a press conference today.

He said in countries like Australia, Parliament has more than 80 researchers.

Ariff said the research team in Malaysia’s Parliament should be improved to make it world class.

He said the Parliament should hire researchers of quality.

“Quantity is one thing. We should be able to tap research officers. We always welcome good brains,” he said.
