PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said the spate of complaints and problems related to the ongoing party elections is proof of weaknesses in the online e-voting system.

“You can’t deny the fact that there are so many complaints on the ground and recently Sarawak has come out with a statutory declaration to show how serious it is, the rigging and also the cheating and the process and the system is not stable,” Azmin told reporters in Parliament today.

“There have been many problems over the last three to four weeks, and there are even complaints that the internet is not stable. Then the votes are missing even in my own branch in Gombak,” said Azmin.

The economic affairs minister said the PKR election committee (JPP) must not view the complaints and allegations of impropriety lightly, and ensure that a thorough and fair investigation is carried out.

“How do you explain when you produce QR codes of almost 1700 but the result does not tally. Something’s not right there,” Azmin said.

“These are the demands of the members, and JPP should not take any directives from leaders. They should be independent and should conduct a free and fair elections.”

Voting in Gombak last week was marked by violent skirmishes among supporters of opposing candidates.

Several party branches in Selangor also saw a breakout of fights, and allegations of “phantom voters”.

This is the first time party elections are conducted online via the e-voting system, which is aimed at speeding up the voting process involving some 800,000 PKR members nationwide. – October 24, 2018.
