AUTHORITIES have summoned organisers of a rally to protest against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) for questioning last night, said Umno secretary general Annuar Musa.
Annuar said apart from leaders of the Muslim grouping Gerakan Pembela Ummah, several representatives from Umno and Islamist party PAS who were behind the rally planned for December 8 were called to the Dang Wangi police station last night to discuss details of the protest.
The Ketereh MP said organisers have yet to receive approval from the authorities to hold the rally.
“Last night, the Dang Wangi police station summoned the organisers as well as representatives from Umno and PAS,” Annuar told reporters at the lobby of Parliament today.
“A permit (for the rally) has yet to be obtained, it’s still in the process of negotiation.
“The organisers have to ensure that the protest is conducted peacefully, and cannot make it into a racial issue,” he said.
Concerns have been raised that the protest would heighten racial tensions following a riot at a Hindu temple in Subang Jaya on Monday which left a fireman in critical condition, and several others injured. – November 28, 2018.
