THE driver of a Toyota Vios involved in a fatal accident on the Penang Bridge has turned himself in to assist investigations.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the youth turned himself in at 2am.

The 21-year-old hairstylist from Prai went to the district police headquarters in Bandar Perda to assist investigations and was subsequently detained, he said.

“He reported himself to the police while accompanied by his family members. He is now in the headquarters’ lock-up,” he said in a statement.

“He will be released later on police bail,” he said in a statement, adding police have recorded statements from 15 people in relation to the case.

It was earlier reported that the youth, who tested positive for cannabis after the accident, was warded at a private hospital in Bayan Baru for his injuries.

The accident happened early Sunday morning when the youth’s Toyota Vios crashed into the rear of a Mazda CX5 from the left.

The high-impact collision caused the SUV to spin out of control and fall off the bridge.

The SUV, with driver Moey Yun Peng, a 20-year-old college student strapped to the seat, was retrieved from the sea late yesterday.

Both drivers were former schoolmates who had gone to George Town to attend a birthday party. – January 23, 2019.
