COLLEGE boy Moey Yun Peng, whose Mazda CX5 sports utility vehicle plunged into the sea in a Penang Bridge accident on Sunday, died of drowning.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said a three-hour post mortem at Seberang Jaya Hospital yesterday revealed that the youth died of drowning after the road traffic crash.

Moey’s body was found strapped in the driver’s seat late yesterday afternoon when the SUV was finally retrieved from the sea at 6.30pm. His body was then sent to the hospital for an autopsy.

Moey’s vehicle was hit in the rear from the left by a Toyota Vios driven by his former schoolmate, a 21-year-old hair stylist.

The high-impact collision caused the SUV to spin out of control and fall off the bridge and into the sea in the early Sunday morning accident.

The duo had earlier attended a friend’s birthday party in George Town before they drove back to the mainland. Moey lived in Butterworth, while the Vios driver is from Prai.

It was previously reported that the latter tested positive for cannabis after he was sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.

The youth, after getting further treatment at a private hospital in Bayan Baru, turned himself in to the police at 2am today.

Nik Ros Azhan said the youth was being held at the district police headquarters’ lockup to assist investigation and would be released later today on police bail.

The case is being probed under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. – January 23, 2019.
