THE Toyota Vios driver who survived a crash on the Penang Bridge over the weekend has been released on police bail.

The 21-year-old hairstylist was freed at 6.45pm at the Bukit Mertajam police station.

A woman, believed to be a relative, picked him up.

The youth allegedly crashed his car into a Mazda CX5 SUV on the bridge in the wee hours of Sunday, causing the SUV to spin out of control and plunge into the sea.

The SUV and the body of the victim, Moey Yun Peng, 20, were retrieved yesterday evening.

Moey, a former schoolmate of the Vios driver, died due to drowning.

The accident occurred when the two were returning to the mainland after attending a friend’s birthday party in George Town.

It was reported that the Vios driver, who is being investigated for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, tested positive for cannabis.

Police sources said further investigations will be carried out at the scene of the crash – KM4 of the bridge (mainland-bound) – at 10am tomorrow.

Officials from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research and Penang Bridge operator PLUS Malaysia Bhd will be present. – January 23, 2019.
