THE Transport Ministry is looking to reward good drivers in an attempt to encourage good behaviour and reduce accidents on Malaysian roads, said minister Anthony Loke.

Loke said there were discussions ongoing with Persatuan Insurance Am Malaysia (PIAM) to reduce the insurance premiums for road users, who do not have summons each year.

He also said the “carrot and stick” approach remains the most effective way to educate people on road safety.

“We believe we cannot only use the stick, but the carrot as well to educate people (on road safety).

“While safety should be regarded by everyone, we need to give rewards as a motivation to compel drivers to change their attitude and become courteous and law-abiding when on the road.

“But when we talk about carrot and stick, our message must be very clear to the public that if you don’t follow road rules and regulations, you will be penalised.” Loke told reporters after an event in Serdang.

Loke said that mechanism on how to give incentives and discounts for insurance holders who do not have outstanding summons will have to be established by the insurance companies.

He also said government agencies were also campaigning hard for road safety.

He said the Road Transport Department checking buses departing Terminal Bersepadu Selatan.

“They are checked by RTD before they are given the green light to move but there are still accidents happening.

“We hope that drivers will pay attention to this. What’s important is not only the steps taken by authorities but the drivers must be responsible and must be in the best condition to drive,” he said. – February 1, 2019.
