MOHD Fuzi Harun has been appointed as the new inspector-general of police, replacing Khalid Abu Bakar, this morning.

Fuzi has been mentioned several times as the favourite candidate to replace Khalid, besides deputy IGP Noor Rashid Ibrahim.

The signing ceremony was held at the police training centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Khalid was appointed as the 10th IGP, succeeding Ismail Omar, on May 17, 2013.

Fuzi has another two years to go before reaching the retirement age of 60, compared with Noor Rashid, who is only seven months away from reaching retirement age.

Prior to his new appointment, Fuzi was Special Branch director, taking over the post in 2015 from Akhil Bulat.

Fuzi holds a master’s degree from Universiti Malaya and a bachelor’s degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Anthropology and Sociology.

In 2014, he was appointed as acting deputy IGP for a few months, following the retirement of then deputy IGP Mohd Bakri Zinin, before being appointed as police’s management director.

Khalid retires today after 40 years in service.

He began his career with the force on December 5, 1976, at the age of 19, when he enrolled as an inspector-in-training at the police training centre.

As IGP, Khalid was known for his extensive use of social media platforms like Twitter to communicate to the public and issue informal warnings, which was criticised by civil rights activists, who accused him of using such platforms to curb free speech.

Noor Rashid remains as deputy IGP, but received a promotion in grade, which entitles him to a bigger salary and more benefits.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Mohd Mokhtar Shariff has been appointed as the new Special Branch director.

He was Johor police chief before being appointed as Bukit Aman narcotics director.

In the latest reshuffle within Bukit Aman, Mokhtar was tasked with heading CID, taking over from Mohamad Salleh, who replaced him as narcotics director.

Present at the handover of duties ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and his deputies, Nur Jazlan Mohamed and Masir Kujat. – September 4, 2017.
