IN a farewell speech to mark his retirement today, former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said he is content and had done his best during his tenure.

“I put all my heart and soul into carrying out my duties, and held to… ‘istiqamah’ (preserverance) and loyalty. If there is loyalty, God willing, victory will be ours.

There is no unfinished business. The time has come for me to leave the force, and I accept it,” he said after the handover of duties ceremony at the police training centre in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

He said as long as he lived, he would continue to fight along the police force.

Khalid retires today after 40 years of service. He is succeeded by former Special Branch director Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

In a press conference held after the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Putrajaya had decided to appoint Fuzi as Khalid’s successor through the police commission and to retain Noor Rashid Ibrahim as deputy IGP.

“We also decided to appoint Mohd Mokhtar Shariff as the new Special Branch director.”

Zahid said Khalid was an extraordinary IGP for his loyalty and ability to solve problems in a professional manner.

Fuzi said 343 new posts had been created to boost the counterterrorism unit.

His appointment is timely, with the country facing a new kind of threat in the form of Islamic State terrorism.

Fuzi was seen as the best candidate to take over from Khalid given his experience in the Special Branch and dealing with counterterrorism issues. – September 4, 2017.
