THE former Umno members who joined Bersatu today said they will stay friends with the loose opposition pact of Gabungan Bersatu Sabah (GBS).
“We will maintain our friendship and cooperation with GBS, so long as they are supportive of Pakatan Harapan policies,” Sulaman rep Hajiji Mohd Noor, who led the group out of Sabah Umno last year, told The Malaysian Insight.
He was among eight former Umno members who received their Bersatu membership cards from chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Putrajaya this evening.
The others are MPs Abd Rahim Bakri (Kudat), Azizah Mohd Dun (Beaufort), Dr Ronald Kiandee (Beluran) and Zakaria Mohd Edris (Libaran), Karanaan assemblyman Masidi Manjun, and Senators John Ambrose and Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin.
Asked whether he will lead Sabah Bersatu, to be launched next month, Hajiji said: “They (Bersatu supreme council) have indicated so.”
He added that Dr Mahathir will make an announcement on the matter soon.
Another MP, Hefez Yamani Musa, as well as more assemblymen are expected to join the Pakatan Harapan component during its launch, said Hajiji.
The reps are Rahim Ismail (Pantai Manis), Japlin Akim (Usukan), Mohd Ariffin Mohd Arif (Membakut), Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan (Apas), Isnin Aliasnih (Klias) and Ghulam Bahadar Khan (Kawang).
Dr Mahathir and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin are scheduled to launch the party’s Sabah chapter in Kota Kinabalu on April 6.
GBS’ deputy chairmen, Parti Bersatu Sabah leader Dr Maximus Ongkili and Parti Solidariti Sabah president Jeffrey Kitingan, did not respond when asked to comment on the new Bersatu members. – March 15, 2019.
