CHIEF Judge of Sabah and Sarawak David Wong Dak Wah has played down the relocation of the high court registrar’s office from Sarawak to Sabah, saying it is just moving it to a bigger space.

“It has been in Kuching for over 50 years. They just want to move it here (Kota Kinabalu). Nothing (else) has changed,” he told The Malaysian Insight when met in Kota Kinabalu today.

He added that the online system will now be handled from the newly opened RM147 million Kota Kinabalu Court Complex at Bukit Punai, off Jalan Kolam in Kota Kinabalu.

Wong was met during the launch of the national level Earth Day in Likas, Kota Kinabalu.

When asked if the move is unconstitutional as claimed by some lawyers, he said: “Not that I’m aware of.”

It was reported today that the federal government would relocate the registrar’s office from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu effective May 1, according to a circular that was leaked online.

De facto law minister Liew Vui Keong and Sabah Law Society, when contacted over the matter, said they will be issuing their statements later. – April 21, 2019
