DRUG syndicates are using children to do the drug pushing for them, said Deputy Home Minister Mohd Azis Jamman today.
He said the syndicates were exploiting the legal loophole, knowing that children cannot be charged in court and face capital punishment.
“They are using this loophole. As the children are underage, they will not be charged in court, but will instead be sent to rehabilitation centres.
“I have seen this with my own eyes. Children no older than 15 years old are being used by the syndicates to push drugs,” he told reporters at the flag-off of a drug awareness motorcycle convoy in Kota Kinabalu.
Although the problem in Sabah was not as serious compared to other major towns in the country, Aziz pointed out that his ministry was presently looking at ways to end the exploits.
In Sabah’s case, he said, most of the pushers were undocumented children.
Some 50 big bikers later took part in the anti-drug awareness convoy which was held in view of the Regatta Lepa Silver Jubilee festivities.
The programme was jointly organised by the National Anti-Drugs Agency and the Sabah Big Bikers Club.
Later, Azis who joined the bikers on the convoy from Kota Kinabalu to Semporna via the Ranau-Kundasang road was involved in a road accident near Tuaran, some 40km from Kota Kinabalu.
A statement from his office said Azis met with the accident at about 10am, halfway through the journey from Kota Kinabalu to Ranau district.
The statement said that Azis, who is the Sepanggar MP, suffered minor injuries and was being treated at a hospital. – April 24, 2019.
