THE Sandakan by-election will be a five-cornered fight, with three independents joining opposition Parti Bersatu Sabah in its hopes of wresting the federal seat from Sabah DAP.

Election commission (EC) managing officer Hamsan Awg Supain announced the names of the five candidates at the closing of nomination this morning.

“The first to file his nomination was independent candidate Sulaiman Abdul Samat, followed by PBS’ Linda Tsen Thau Lin, independent Hamza Abdullah, independent Chea Siew Yung and Sabah DAP Vivian Wong Shir Yee,” said Hamsan.

“After going through all their nominations papers, and found them to be satisfactory, I declare all nominations have been accepted,” he said after the nomination process was completed at the SMJK Tiong Hua in Batu 2.5, Sandakan, Sabah.

The Sandakan seat fell vacant following the death of its MP Stephen Wong from Sabah DAP.

Hamsan said Tsen and Vivian, who is Wong’s daughter, will use the PBS and DAP logos respectively in their campaigning.

Wong defeated Barisan Nasional’s Lim Ming Hoo with a majority of more than 10,000 votes during the 14th general election. – April 27, 2019.
