DO not push National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) loan defaulters too hard but give them time to settle their debts, said Anwar Ibrahim.

The PKR president was commenting on PTPTN’s announcement earlier of its plans to collect on the loans by preventing defaulters from renewing their passports, road tax, and driving and business licences.

Anwar said he welcomed the people’s suggestions on how to treat the defaulters, except for those who were unable to pay because they were unemployed.

“I will support the people’s will. I believe that they generally will not agree to any strict and firm action, especially against those who are not working yet.

“Why press defaulters without jobs?” he said after breaking fast with Abim in Bangi today.

Earlier today, PTPTN warned that it may reintroduce a travel ban for defaulters if the people are in favour of it.

PTPTN chairman Wan Saiful Wan Jan, however, said Putrajaya would have the final say.

“If the people are for it, we will bring it up to the cabinet, but the decision is not in our hands.” – May 16, 2019.
