THE Local Government and Housing Ministry has reaffirmed plans to build a waste-to-energy plant in every state by 2020 to resolve the country’s mounting rubbish problem.

WTE is a waste management facility where solid rubbish is incinerated to produce electricity.

Minister Zuraida Kamarudin said efforts will also be done to encourage recycling within communities to reduce wastes.

“At present, there are many redemption programmes to promote recycling within housing communities, where their (recyclable) discards can be redeemed with cash or food items.

“We want such programmes to help the public and housing communities to generate income from recycling so they are able to maintain their housing areas,” she told the media after a breaking of fast event in Kota Kinabalu tonight.

The event was organised by the civil society group Penggerak Komuniti Negara.

She said this is part of the target of the National Community Policy to build sustainable communities, whereby residential areas can generate economic activities to create conducive neighbourhoods.

At the moment, such efforts are quite active in the peninsular Malaysia, but not so in Sabah, said Zuraida.

She added Penggerak Komuniti Negara will help the ministry approach residential communities to explain and ensure the implementation of the policies. – May 22, 2019.
