Sabah think-tank boss defends removal of acting CEO

THERE is no dispute in Sabah’s Institute Development of Studies when it let go of its acting CEO Johan Ariffin Samad as it is done in accordance to procedures, said institute chairman Simon Sipaun.
Refuting talks of infighting between the duo, Sipaun said Johan’s tenure is ended following a six-month probation.
On May 29, the board voted 6-5 not to confirm Johan, two days ahead of the end of his six-month probation as the board meeting was held early in view of Harvest Festival holidays on May 31.
Controversy broke when Johan, who was appointed as acting CEO last November, challenged his non-confirmation.
“Sadly, things have turned sour. There were many parties who had expressed interest to take on the position.
“But I decided to advertise the position on the papers after the chief minister consented to the idea.
“I had wanted Johan as he writes and presents his thoughts very well. But sadly, the board of directors don’t see it that way,” Sipaun told The Malaysian Insight.
Sabah Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal was dragged into the issue after Johan met him on June 3 over the matter and again on June 12.
According to Johan, his removal was the result of a boardroom tussle.
Shafie had planned to resolve the issue once fully briefed over the infighting and after the Hari Raya festivities.
Sipaun, meanwhile, said he met Shafie on June 11 to inform Shafie on his side of the story.
“The only response I believed I got from the chief minister after I presented all the files and details was that there is only one thing to do, and that the things that IDS do must be for the best for IDS,” said Sipaun, adding that Shafie did not say whether he would directly intervene into the institute affairs.
On June 14, Sipaun announced the removal of Johan along with one of the directors Hasnol Ayob and until a suitable CEO is found. In the interim, deputy CEO Anthony Kiob will be carrying out the duty of interim CEO.
Sipaun said all parties related to the institute had been notified over the removal in a letter distributed after the board meeting last month.
Meanwhile, Johan said he is presently exploring all avenues to redress the situation and to protect his good name. – June 16, 2019.
