Tread carefully on pact with Umno, delegate tells PAS congress

PAS will be split if its leaders do not explain a pact with Umno, a Kedah delegate told the Islamist party’s annual congress today.
Ahmad Yahya said it will be the same with Umno, as there would be factions who would not want this pact to work.
“If we fail to accomplish these two tasks, that is to make the members understand and wala (abide by the decision of the leadership) we will face challenges ahead.
“Those who are disgruntled with an Umno-PAS pact may start a new party, thus we will be divided,” he said.
He said this pact must be made clear to members to prevent a group of PAS leaders quit to form a splinter party, like what happened in the case of Amanah.
“Be careful not to repeat history. There will be new factions in this party. Maintain unity in the party,” Ahmad said, adding that the cooperation between PAS and Umno should be based on Islamic principles.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday acknowledged that there were members of both parties who were uneasy with this pact but assured them this issue would be resolved.
Hadi, however, stressed that PAS will not spearhead the pact despite calls from many factions within the party to do so.
He did not rule out the possibility of a third force that may join the pact and become its leader. – June 22, 2019.
