KHAIRY Jamaluddin today chastised his former Umno Youth colleagues for degrading Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi’s name during a protest last weekend.

“Those who uttered vulgar terms, those who were rude… I don’t think that was appropriate,” said the Rembau lawmaker, who was Umno Youth chief from 2009 to last year.

“If we want to criticise her, that’s okay. If we want to say her statement was not right, that she was not being sensitive to Malays, that’s okay. But to turn her name into something vulgar, I don’t think that’s acceptable,” he told reporters after a talk at Sunway University.

Umno Youth members on Saturday staged a protest outside Wong’s office, following her remarks on the plan to teach the Jawi script to Year Four pupils in vernacular schools.

When explaining that the Arabic-based script has nothing to do with religion, she had said some erotic novels in the 1940s were written in Jawi.

Wong is believed to have been referring to an argument first made by renowned Malay historian Dr Mohd Faizal Musa.

Umno Youth members, angered by her comments, resorted to calling her “Wong P***”, using a vulgar Bahasa Malaysia term for female genitals.

Today, Khairy urged his party colleagues to be rational and mature when criticising Pakatan Harapan politicians.

“I hope that they can give intellectual and rational criticism. We can criticise ethically without losing effectiveness in our arguments.” – August 19, 2019.
