MALAYSIA today recorded 31 new coronavirus cases, a sharp increase from yesterday’s record-low two cases, but the number of patients discharged still outnumbered new infections at 51.

Director-general of health said only one of the new cases was Malaysian.

The death toll stays at 118 with no new deaths.

Total recoveries numbered 7,065, or 84.4% of the cumulative 8,369 infections, Noor Hisham told a daily press conference in Putrajaya.

Of the 31 new cases, Noor Hisham said 11 were infected in Egypt.

Of the 20 cases of local transmission, all save one were foreigners . The sole Malaysian patient is a worker at a tahfiz centre in Selangor.

Of the 19 foreigners, 16 were from the Pedas cluster in Negri Sembilan. The Pedas cluster originated from the index case of a foreign worker at a chicken factory.

The infections were detected on the 13th day of the workers’ quarantine, Noor Hisham said.

He said the Kampung Sungai Lui cluster in Selangor and the Kuala Lumpur Cleaning Company cluster each reported a new case.

He said a foreign worker tested positive when he returned to work in Kuala Lumpur.  – June 12, 2020.
