THE government today announced three people from the same household are allowed to travel in one vehicle in conditional movement-control order areas, effective today.

This is a change from the previous standard operating procedure, which only allowed two people from the same household to travel in the same car.

“After discussion, today’s special National Security Council meeting made a decision to allow three individuals in a car.

“This also applies to taxi and e-hailing vehicles, in which a driver can carry two passengers at a time,” said Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob in his daily press conference.

He said the NSC has relaxed the rule after receiving numerous complaints from the public.

Earlier this week, Ismail Sabri clarified the second passenger in a car can be seated next to the driver, and not at the back.

He also said police have been asked to be more compassionate in special circumstances.

“For example, parents bringing out two toddlers for safety reasons or having to bring unwell grandparents to the hospital.

“However, they are still finding it hard to make the right judgment. So, we relax the SOP,” he said.

On a related note, Ismail Sabri said many were still crossing state borders for working purposes.

“I know there are many who travel from Negri Sembilan to work in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. This is why we recommended the work-from-home rule.

“For now, we will allow them to pass after they show us the letter. We will see if there is any need to relax this rule.” – November 13, 2020.
