2 out of 10 births in 2019 recorded in Selangor, Parliament told

TWO out of 10 births recorded in Malaysia last year were in Selangor, said Mustapa Mohamed.
Mustapa said Department of Statistics data showed there were 487,957 births recorded in the country last year.
“Out of this, Selangor had 95,211 (19.5%) births, followed by Johor with 60,098 (12.3%), and Sabah 52,686 (10.8%),” said the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economic Affairs) in a written reply to the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
The Federal Territory of Labuan and Putrajaya had the lowest number of births at 1,665 (0.3%) and 2,314 (0.5%) respectively.
Mustapa was responding to Chan Ming Kai (Alor Setar-PH) who asked about birth rates among B40, M40 and T20 income groups according to states and race and how many were classified as hardcore poor.
The minister said Bumiputeras accounted for 78.8% (384,454) of births, followed by Chinese at 11.9% (57,985) and Indians at 4.2% (20,677).
The top three highest states with Bumiputera births were in Selangor (67,735) followed by Sabah (43,283) and Johor (42,769).
Meanwhile, the overall poverty rate has declined from 7.6% in 2016 to 5.6% in 2019, said Mustapa.
“Bumiputera poverty has dropped to 7.2% in 2019 from 9.7% in 2016 while Chinese and Indian poverty have also declined to 1.4% and 4.8% respectively,” said the Jeli MP.
According to the data provided by Mustapa, Sabah still has the highest poverty rate at 19.5% in 2019, followed by Kelantan (12.4%) and Sarawak (9%).
The states with the lowest poverty rates were in FT Kuala Lumpur at 0.4%, followed by FT Putrajaya and Selangor at 0.4% and 1.2% respectively. – December 3, 2020.
