KOTA Tampan assemblyman Saarani Mohamad was sworn in as Perak’s 14th menteri besar before Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah at Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar, today.
The 59-year-old Umno lawmaker replaces Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who resigned along with his exco on Saturday, after losing the support of the majority of assemblymen in a confidence motion last Friday.
Saarani is also Perak Umno chairman and previously held the exco position overseeing rural development and plantations, human capital development, and entrepreneur development, cooperatives and consumer affairs.
Saarani was appointed as the Perak opposition leader during the Pakatan Harapan (PN) administration, before PH collapsed earlier this year and the Perikatan Nasional comprising of BN, Bersatu and PAS took over.
Faizal resigned on March 9 this year, following the change of federal government but was reappointed as the 13th menteri besar to lead the PN government until his resignation after failing the confidence motion.
The Perak assembly has 59 seats with BN holding the most at 25 seats, followed by DAP (16), Amanah (5), Bersatu (5), PKR (3) and PAS (3), while Gerakan and an independent have one seat each. – December 10, 2020.
