LOCAL councils have been empowered by the Health Ministry to issue compounds to those who breach standard operating procedure (SOP) at Ramadan bazaars, Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

“The mayor, president of local authorities and local authority enforcement officers grade 19 and above are allowed to compound any offence under Act 342,” he said, referring to the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

The Muslim fasting month just began yesterday, but already, the National Security Council (NSC) has received several complaints from the public on non-compliance of SOP at some bazaars at several locations, the defence minister said in a statement.

He said the NSC took this seriously as Covid-19 infections are still high daily numbers.

The country today recorded 1,889 new cases in the past 24 hours.

All states in the country also reported new infections today, while active cases have also been climbing in recent days, and numbering 16,696in total. – April 14, 2021.
