MALAYSIA has recorded 6,075 new Covid-19 cases, the highest daily count yet since the start of the pandemic, said Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Selangor continued its record of being the state with the highest daily cases, at 2,251, followed by Johor with 699 cases and Kuala Lumpur with 660 cases.

The previous all-time high was 5,728 cases, recorded on January 30.

Other states that reported a high number of cases were Kelantan (441), Kedah (445) and Sarawak (323).

Only Putrajaya and Perlis reported single digits, of nine and six cases respectively.

More than a third of the new cases were detected in Selangor and the spike is believed to be linked to the state’s continuous free large-scale screening tests on its residents.

Since May 8, Selangor had ramped up Covid-19 testing and had been conducting free screening in all 56 state constituencies. The programme is scheduled to run until the end of May.

The report of the free screening programme found those between the ages of 20 and 40 to be Covid-19 positive without having any symptoms.

Selangor Health Care (Selcare) manager, Mohd Noor Md Nasir, said based on screenings between May 8 and 11, almost 80% of the individuals who are Covid-19 but without symptoms are from that age group (20 to 40 years). – May 19, 2021.
