MALAYSIA today recorded the highest number of admissions to intensive care units (ICU) with 559 new cases in the past 24 hours, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Today’s figure topped the 531 admitted to ICU yesterday, and reflects the continuing spike in new infections and the more rapid deterioration of patients to the more advanced stages of Covid-19.

Noor Hisham said that those currently requiring respiratory support had also increased by 26 to 303.

The country today recorded 6,075 new cases, the highest daily count yet since the start of the pandemic.

It also recorded the second-highest number of 46 fatalities.

Noor Hisham said the deaths today bring the toll of fatalities to 2,040.

There were also 3,516 recoveries today, bringing the total to 436,116.

Noor Hisham said that out of the positive cases today, three were imported, involving one Malaysian and two foreigners.

He added that there are currently 47,340 active Covid-19 cases nationwide. – May 19, 2021.
