New record of 59 Covid-19 deaths, 587 in ICU

MALAYSIA today recorded a new record of 59 Covid-19 deaths, taking the nationwide toll to 2,099, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
The number of patients in intensive care units also climbed to a new high of 587, with 330 of them needing intubation.
Malaysia recorded 6,806 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest daily count yet since the start of the pandemic.
Selangor continued to top daily cases at 2,277, followed by Kuala Lumpur (655) and Johor (615).
The previous all-time daily high was yesterday when 6,075 new infections were registered while the previous record of daily death was 47 on May 18.
The deaths today involved 14 cases in Johor, Selangor (10), Kuala Lumpur (8), Kelantan (6), four each in Negri Sembilan and Malacca, three cases each in Kedah, Perak, and Terengganu, Sarawak (2), and one case each in Sabah and Penang.
The oldest was a 91-year-old man from Sarawak and the youngest a 37-year-old man from Johor, both of whom had a history of medical conditions.
There were also 3,916 recoveries today, bringing the total to 440,032.
Noor Hisham said that out of the positive cases today, two were imported, involving two Malaysians.
He added that there are currently 492,302 active Covid-19 cases nationwide. – May 20, 2021.
