74 deaths, 894 patients in ICU as new cases climb to 6,440

INTENSIVE Care Unit (ICU) cases dropped for the second day today with 894 Covid-19 patients under critical care in the last 24 hours, said Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Of this number, 451 patients were placed on respiratory support.

Noor Hisham said 74 people succumbed to the coronavirus, which raised the death toll to 4,276.

The country also recorded 6,440 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the cumulative total to 685,204.

The number of cases in the ICU dropped yesterday after being on the uptrend for 40 consecutive days.

The number of ICU cases fell from a record high of 924 cases on Wednesday to 909 yesterday, and dropped further to 894 today.

Noor Hisham said recoveries continued to outstrip new cases after 6,861 people recuperated from Covid-19.

With this, the total number of recoveries now stood at 615,326.

Active cases, on the other hand, declined to 65,602 from yesterday’s 66,097.

There were six dead-on-arrival cases today. The health history for five of them was not available while one had a history of diabetes and blood pressure.

The youngest person to succumb to the coronavirus today was a 29-year-old woman in Labuan who was dead on arrival. The deceased’s health status was unknown.

Covid-19 also claimed the life of a 91-year-old cancer patient who died at the Jelebu Hospital in Negeri Sembilan. She was the oldest person on the list of deceased.

Selangor saw the highest number of deaths with 28 cases, followed by Sarawak and Johor with seven cases each.

Sabah reported six cases, Labuan reported five and Kuala Lumpur saw four cases.

Malacca reported three cases each while Pahang registered two deaths.

Perak, Terengganu and Kedah reported one case each. – June 18, 2021.
