SEVERAL Covid-19 vaccination centres have ran out of supplies, due the high rate of use, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

The minister in charge of the national Covid-19 immunisation programme said this only happened at a few centres.

“Due to the high number of vaccination rates, several centres have run out of stock,” he said during a press conference at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec).

However, he did not name any of the centres hit by this supply shortage.

He noted that the issue only lasted several days and he hoped by next month this will not happen again as the country will receive more stock.

Earlier this week, Khairy said more mega vaccination centres will be opened to ramp up the nation’s vaccination drive as supplies come in.

Khairy said the government is also looking to open smaller-scale centres that will be able to cater to between 3,000 and 5,000 people a day.

“We are looking to open up more Tier 2 mega centres, for instance in Seremban, and are looking through all the states, the capacity they have, and matching that data against our delivery schedules.”

With the opening of the centre at Bukit Jalil Stadium, the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil now has two centres in its vicinity, the other being the Axiata Arena, which can take up to 4,000 people.

Bukit Jalil Stadium will handle younger vaccine recipients aged below 60, while the nearby Axiata Arena is reserved for senior citizens and people with disabilities. – June 26, 2021.
