Record-breaking 135 Covid-19 deaths, 952 in ICU

MALAYSIA today recorded 135 new Covid-19 deaths, setting the highest daily fatalities record in the country.
The previous highest daily death toll was 126 on June 2.
At the same time, the number of patients admitted in intensive care units has remained high at 952, with 445 requiring respiratory support.
Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Malaysia also recorded 8,868 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, making it the second-highest in daily cases recorded since the outbreak of the pandemic early last year.
The record number of daily Covid-19 cases is 9,020, logged on May 29 this year.
The latest figures bring the country’s death toll to 5,903.
The deaths today involved 63 cases in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur (24), Johor (nine), eight cases each in Negri Sembilan and Malacca, four cases each in Sarawak and Kelantan, three cases each in Sabah, Pahang and Perak, two cases each in Penang and Putrajaya, as well as one each in Terengganu and Labuan.
Of the total deaths today, 30 of them had no known medical illness.
The oldest person to succumb to the virus was a 90-year-old man from Kuala Lumpur who suffered from diabetes and heart issues.
The youngest was a 29-year-old man from Penang who had no history of medical illness.
Twenty of the deaths were dead-on-arrival cases.
The new cases today also outnumbered the 5,802 recoveries, putting active cases at 77,275 compared to yesterday’s 74, 344.
The country’s total number of Covid-19 cases since the onset of the pandemic is 808,658. – July 8, 2021.
