More Covid-19 cases in Klang Valley in coming days

THE number of daily Covid-19 cases in Klang Valley areas under the enhanced movement-control order (EMCO) is expected to increase as health authorities conduct more screenings.

Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said at least 10% of residents in the EMCO areas covering 34 districts and 14 localities in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have been screened.

Priority is given to those in high-risk groups, he said in a statement. 

“The number of daily cases are to increase as a result,” he said.

The EMCO in these areas began on July 1 and is expected to end on July 16. 

Selangor has contributed 42.02% of 47,811 cases from July 1-7, compared to only 38.33% of 40,973 cases from June 24-30. 

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur has contributed 13.01% of cases from July 1-7.

Today, the country recorded its second-highest Covid-19 figure of 8,868 cases, with bulk of the cases coming from the Klang Valley with 5,285 cases.

Noor Hisham added that RT-PCR testing capacity has been increased to 116,803 tests a day.

Currently, 92 labs are conducting RT-PCR tests, of which 24 are government hospital laboratories, 41 at private laboratories and 13 at universities.

The remainder are at labs under various government agencies, such as the National Public Health Laboratory, Institute of Medical Research, Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. – July 8, 2021.
