MALAYSIA broke yet another grim record today after reporting 11,618 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

The health D-G said that the fresh cases have raised the national caseload to 867,567.

This is the second consecutive day that new infections have trended in the region of 11,000 cases.

Yesterday, the country saw a record-breaking 11,097 cases, which was the first time Malaysia’s daily cases broke into the five-figure mark.

Noor Hisham had warned yesterday that the country will see an increase in daily infections due to the emergence of the extremely infectious Delta variant of the virus and due to mass testing in the Klang Valley.

“There are airborne transmissions, which can spread (the virus) within a short period,” he said.

Selangor accounted for almost half of the cases today with 5,051 new infections, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan with 1,749 and 1,537 cases respectively.

Other states which reported new cases were Johor (396), Sabah (286), Sarawak (289), Penang (210), Kelantan (236), Kedah (504), Perak (164), Malacca (526), Pahang (400), Terengganu (189), Labuan (38), and Putrajaya (40).

Perlis, which did not report a single infection yesterday, saw three new cases today.

Meanwhile, a record high of 424,541 doses of vaccine were dispensed under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme on July 13.

This brings the total number of doses administered under the programme, which kickstarted on February 24, to 12.21 million.

A total of 3.84 million people or 16.4% of the adult population have been fully immunised against the coronavirus, while 8.36 million or 35.7% of adults in Malaysia who are eligible for vaccination, have received their first dose. – July 14, 2021.
