16,117 new Covid-19 cases, second highest since onset of pandemic

MALAYSIA recorded 16,117 new Covid-19 cases today, its second highest count since the onset of the pandemic, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.  

He said this took the national caseload to 1,044,071.

Selangor continued to report the highest daily count with 6,616 cases, taking its tally since the start of the pandemic to 380,593 cases.

Kuala Lumpur reported 2,457 cases, which means the Klang Valley accounted for 9,073 infections – more than half of the fresh cases in the past 24 hours. 

Infections were also high in Kedah, at 1,000, Johor (907) and Sabah (741).  

Other states with new cases are Malacca (674), Negri Sembilan (669), Penang (618), Kelantan (592), Perak (583), Sarawak (405), Pahang (403), Terengganu (317) and Perlis (two).

Putrajaya and Labuan reported 122 and 11 cases respectively.

Meanwhile, the country administered 521,923 vaccine doses under the national Covid-19 immunisation programme yesterday.

A total of 333,621 people received their first dose while 188,302 others got their second shot to complete the course. 

Nationwide, 5.7 million people or 17.5% of the population have had two shots while 12.1 million others or 37.1% of the population have had one. – July 27, 2021.
