FOUR Covid-19 cases were detected in Parliament in the past two days, said Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun, in explaining why the sitting cannot go on beyond 5.30pm.

Azhar was responding to Hang Tuah Jaya MP Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, who asked that the sitting today be extended as there were a lot of issues that needed to be debated on the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Even now, we are not following the advice of the health director. If we were to follow his recommendations, Parliament can only sit till 2pm,” Azhar said, adding that the health director is very concerned over the pandemic situation.

“Yesterday and today we detected four cases so the risk of the virus spreading here is high but I still allowed the sitting to go on till 5.30pm to allow everyone the chance to debate.”

Azhar, however, did not reveal the identities of the four who had tested positive for the virus.

It was earlier reported that three lawmakers had tested positive over the weekend while four others were identified as close contacts.

Among the MPs who tested positive was Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. – July 28, 2021.
