MALAYSIA recorded 174 new Covid-19 deaths today while a high number of 1,043 patients are in intensive care units, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

Of the 1,043 admissions, 531 require respiratory support. He said the country also recorded 179,179 active cases nationwide.

Noor Hisham said with the 174 fatalities today, the death toll now stands at 8,725.

The deaths today were reported in Selangor (70), Kuala Lumpur (20), Johor (17), Kedah (17), Malacca (10), Negri Sembilan (nine), Penang (nine), Sabah (eight), Terengganu (eight), Perak (three), Kelantan (two) and Pahang (one).

Of the total, 28 were dead on arrival.

Noor Hisham said the country recorded 12,930 recoveries today, taking the cumulative toll to 890,742.

He said of the daily cases reported today, a total of 383 cases or 2.3% were from categories 3 (pneumonia), 4 (requiring oxygen) and 5 (critical condition).

Another 16,787 cases or 97.7% were from categories 1 (asymptomatic) and 2 (mild symptoms).

As to the rate of infection (Rt), Noor Hisham said the average for Malaysia was 1.16 as of yesterday.

“The states that recorded the highest Rt value were Terengganu (1.33), Kelantan (1.26) followed by Sabah and Penang (1.25).

“All states recorded Rts above 1.0 except Labuan, Perlis and Negri Sembilan,” he said. – July 29, 2021.
