THE number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units (ICU) rose further to 1,055 today, with more than half or 532 of them requiring respiratory support, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

There were 1,043 cases in ICU yesterday.

Malaysia also recorded 134 fatalities today, bringing the cumulative death toll to 8,859. 

With 16,840 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, the number of active cases nationwide is now 183,706, he added.

The deaths today were reported in Selangor (35), Malacca (17), 15 cases each in Johor and Negri Sembilan, 12 cases each in Kedah and Perak, Kuala Lumpur (10), Sabah (six), Terengganu (five), Pahang (four), Kelantan (two) and Penang (one).

Of the total, nine were dead on arrival.

He said of the daily cases reported today, a total of 284 cases or 1.7% were from category 3 (pneumonia), category 4 (requiring oxygen) and category 5 (critical condition).

Another 16,556 cases or 98.3% were from categories 1 (asymptomatic) and 2 (mild symptoms).

For the infection rate, Noor Hisham said the average for Malaysia was 1.15 as of yesterday.

“The states that recorded the highest Rt value were Terengganu (1.36), Kelantan (1.27), followed by Sabah and Penang (1.22).

“All states recorded Rts above 1.0 except Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Perlis and Negri Sembilan,” he said. – July 30, 2021.
