MALAYSIA recorded an increase in Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours with 19,991 new infections after a slight dip in numbers yesterday, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

Yesterday, the country reported 17,236 infections. The highest daily tally so far was on August 6 when 20,889 cases were reported.

Selangor recorded 7,338 cases while Kuala Lumpur recorded 2,374. This is followed by Kedah with 1,830 cases.

Kedah has been reporting a surge in cases over the past few weeks due to close contacts of factory clusters in the state, according to the state’s health director Dr Othman Warijo.

He said most of the cases were of family members and friends of those who work in factories and had contracted the virus earlier.

He said the spike in such cases could be seen in Kuala Muda, Kulim and Baling districts where most of the cases were of close contacts and symptomatic screenings.

Meanwhile, Sabah reported 1,383 cases, Johor (1,344), Penang (743), Kelantan (1,030), Negri Sembilan (564), Perak (953), Pahang (539), Sarawak (836), Terengganu (378), Malacca (578), Putrajaya (76), Perlis (24) and Labuan reported one new infection.
