A CENSUS has found Malaysia to have more men than women as well as a working-age population of nearly 70%.

Chief statistician Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said 24.9 million residents, or 76.3% of the population of 32.6 million, have taken part in Census 2020, which is in its 421st day. 

He said 95.4% of the residents were citizens and 4.6%, non-citizens.

Data collated so far showed the citizenry to be made up of 70.4% Bumiputera, 22.4% Chinese, 6.4% Indian and 0.8% other ethnic groups.

Uzir said there were 104 men for every 100 women in the country.

“The male population is 51%, higher than the female population of 49%,” he said.

He said 69.7% of the respondents were working age (15-64 years), 24.5% were young (0-14 years) and 5.8% are aged 65 years and above.

The highest population response came from Putrajaya (101.3%), followed by Johor (103.1%), Kelantan (93.7%) and Perlis (94.1%).

The census has been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. – August 31, 2021.
