THE police have issued a RM3,000 compound each to opposition members of Parliament who had gathered at Dataran Merdeka in the federal capital on August 2.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Azmi Abu Kassim told The Malaysian Insight today that a total of 33 MPs from more than 100 investigated have been issued with the RM3,000 compound notice.

“I can’t remember the full name list but I am certain they are all MPs,” he said.

THE investigation papers on a number of MPs gathering at Dataran Merdeka in the federal capital on August 2 had been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

The MPs had gathered at Dataran Merdeka to demand for the resumption of the special Dewan Rakyat sitting but had dispersed without incident after being ordered by the police.

The five-day special sitting was scheduled to end on August 2 but was postponed on the advice of the Health Ministry following the detection of several Covid-19 in the House.

Last month, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said all the MPs involved in the gathering had given their statements and police had also completed investigations into the matter.

“Insya Allah, there will be a decision and action will be taken. It might not take long,” he had said.

On the day of the rally, Azmi had said that the police would be calling in 107 opposition MPs for questioning.

They were investigated for breaching the Covid-19 standard operating procedures and Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Among those who had participated at the rally included Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and leaders of opposition parties such as Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Mohamad Sabu, Lim Guan Eng, Mohd Shafie Apdal and Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman. – September 13, 2021.
