Mandatory Covid-19 test before entering Langkawi, says Khairy

PEOPLE looking to travel to Langkawi from tomorrow must take a Covid-19 test before entering the island, said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
This is a new ruling introduced by the government, as such a test was unnecessary previously, at the behest of Langkawi MP Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Khairy said travellers can either show a PCR/Antigen test result taken within 48 hours of travel or they can purchase a saliva self-test kit and bring it to the airport or ferry terminal to take the test at the screening point.
He said travellers are also allowed to purchase a self-test kit at the screening point itself and conduct the test on the spot at the airport or ferry terminal.
Khairy said the test will be performed on everyone age seven and upwards. For children younger than seven, only symptom screening will be carried out, taking into account their capabilities to remove saliva.
He said this group of children must be with a parent or caregiver who has completed vaccinations, is Covid-free and shall comply with the prescribed SOP.
“Covid-19 tests conducted at airports and ferry terminals will be monitored and verified by the health personnel on duty.”
“People passing the test will be allowed entry, while those testing positive will not be allowed to continue the journey and will be managed by health personnel.”
Previously, testing was not mandatory, only that tourists would have to be vaccinated to visit the island.
Starting Thursday, domestic tourists from all over the country, with the exception of those residing in areas subject to the enhanced movement control order, are allowed to visit Langkawi.
People will be able to stay in hotels or homestays, go to the beach, engage in water sports, snorkelling, scuba diving, and visit parks and heritage sites. – September 15, 2021.
