PUTRAJAYA will extend the validity of expired passports for two years for Malaysians who are currently abroad, Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin said today.
“The government will extend the passport validity for Malaysians who are abroad for two years for free. This extension took effect on June 17 and is available until December 2021,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.
The decision was made after taking into account the prolonged Covid-19 epidemic, he said.
“The Home Ministry, through the immigration department, has taken the initiative to extend the validity period of the passports for two years for free for Malaysians abroad,” he said.
Currently, the government does not intend to grant an exemption for the renewal of Malaysian passports, he said.
This follows the government’s decision to extend the passport validity for Singapore-based Malaysians in July after complaints about the difficulty to renew the passport online and long queues at the Malaysian High Commission.
To date, the country’s borders are still closed to curb the spread of Covid-19. – September 22, 2021.
