MORE opposition members of Parliament have been named to select committees in keeping with reforms agreed upon under the government-Pakatan Harapan (PH) memorandum of understanding (MOU).

In the revamp, there will be nine new select committees with each committee having nine MPs.

The committees will each comprise five government and four opposition MPs.

In the list, which was signed by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun, government MPs will head eight of the committees.

Only the health, science and innovation committee and public accounts committee (PAC) are headed by opposition lawmakers, Kelvin Yii (Bandar Kuching-PH) and Wong Kah Woh (Ipoh Timur-PH).

The list, however, is not final, said PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.

“The Memorandum of Understanding steering committee has come to an understanding that five of the select committees will be chaired by government MPs while another four will be by opposition lawmakers,” Fahmi told The Malaysian Insight.

Interestingly, none of the four Pejuang lawmakers are in any of the select committees and the only independent is Maszlee Malik (Simpang Rengam), in the education committee.

The prime minister and PH inked the MOU on September 13 in a bid to end the intense politicking that resulted in two government changes in 17 months.

The agreement was that Ismail would not seek a dissolution of Parliament before July 31, 2022, and would implement major reforms to clean up and make the country’s institutions more transparent.

For its part, the PH coalition promised to cooperate with the government on these measures.
