THE Umno general assembly has been postponed due to the floods, said party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.
He announced this development in a statement today, but said no new date has been set for the party polls.
“Due to the floods, grassroots members have been asked to help the victims. Some divisions such as Kota Raja and Klang have yet to hold meetings due to the floods.”
The Umno general assembly was slated to be held between January 12 and 15. It will involve more than 6,000 members from 191 divisions nationwide.
The party polls have been postponed three times already. Initially, they were supposed to be held on January 30 and 31, but pushed back due to the movement control order.
In June, Umno said it will be postponing the polls for 18 months due to Covid-19 and the emergency.
“Umno is sad that the people have been badly affected by the floods,” said Ahmad.
He added that he hopes the Barisan National and party machinery, and federal and state governments will continue helping flood-affected folk.
Continuous heavy rain lashed large parts of the Klang Valley from last Friday to Sunday, causing devastating floods.
Other affected states are Perak, Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan, with waters reaching up to roof-level.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government has been criticised for its slow response in helping flood victims.
The floods have displaced 52,095 people and left 41 others dead, while eight others are still missing. Rescue and clean-up efforts are ongoing. – December 25, 2021.
